There are many types of microscopes and they can be grouped in different ways. The first reported use of a binocular microscope in ophthalmology was almost 100 years after Richard Liebreich described his method of magnification in ophthalmic examinations in 1855. This surgical equipment allows ophthalmologists to perform eye surgeries in both the anterior and posterior segment, in any of the most frequent eye surgeries such as cataract, presbyopia or eyestrain, vitreoretin, glaucoma, myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism.

The human eye is an extremely delicate organ, so performing ophthalmic surgery requires the use of high-tech microscopes. Optical microscopes for ophthalmology are designed to provide detailed, high-contrast images of all parts of the human eye. When choosing an ophthalmic microscope it is important to pay attention to the type of optics used.

An ophthalmic surgical microscope can be fixed or adjustable. It can be installed on the ceiling of the operating room or have a mobile base on the floor. Certain models of optical microscopes for ophthalmic surgery have different types of illumination between halogen and LED, and with different types of lenses for high light transmission and with different magnifications, allowing high quality images at low light intensities.
